Monkey Mia Bay

The road to Monkey Mia is sealed and suitable for caravans. It is on the eastern coast of Peron Peninsula, 24km from Denham. There are regular flights from Perth to Shark Bay Airport, a ten minute drive from either Monkey Mia or Denham. Monkey Mia Resort has most of the facilities and services you are likely to need.

Accommodation

RAC Monkey mia dolphin resort

The recently-redeveloped RAC Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort is situated midway up the West Australian coastline within the Shark Bay World-Heritage Area, home to one of the world’s best-known dolphin encounters. Their resort offers a range of accommodation. Options include three and two bedroom self-contained rooms, hotel-style rooms, dormitories and powered and unpowered campsite. Facilities and activities include tennis court, two swimming pools, two camp-kitchens, tour desk concierge, kayak and canoe hire, as well as two restaurants on site.

Accessible only by four-wheel drive (4WD), it has no facilities and is essentially a wilderness camping experience and is one of six designated campgrounds in the area

Francois Peron National Park is an ideal destination for bush camping, four-wheel driving, bush walking and beach fishing, along with swimming and boating within the Shark Bay Marine Park. The Park features four bush camping areas with basic facilities (toilets and gas barbecues) at South Gregories, Gregories, Bottle Bay and Big Lagoon. A fifth camping area exists at Herald Bight with camping available along the soft sandy beaches.

Blue juice charters

Offering top-notch luxury eco-adventure and fishing tours around Western Australia is a point of pride for Blue Juice Charters. Select from three or four-day excursion options to the Abrolhos Islands, departing from Geraldton. Montebello Islands: five-day fishing and wilderness charters departing from Exmouth. Shark bay aviation

Shark Bay Aviation offer a wide variety of scenic lfights that take place over the Shark bay world heritage region and the duration of these flights is roughly 20 to 90 minutes, with a variety of charter flights able to be requested.

Perfect Nature Cruises

Through Perfect Nature Cruises, you may explore the Shark Bay World Heritage Area and witness some incredible aquatic species. You could spot humpback whales, manta rays, loggerhead turtles, dugongs, and sponging dolphins. Alternatively, you could just unwind and take in the 230 different species of birds that flutter over. Take a trip and treat yourself to a spectacular private cruise. Snorkel in glistening pure waters and paddle over vibrant fish reefs. Explore Dirk Hartog Island and find yourself standing on Australia’s westernmost tip.

Monkey Mia Dolphins

Rangers feed the dolphins up to three times each morning, between 07:45 and 12 midday. It’s recommended to arrive to the beach by 07:30 for the best experience and the chance to feed one for yourself!

Four wheel driving

To experience an exciting four-wheel drive journey alongside breathtaking red cliffs and white sand beaches, visit Francois Peron National Park, located in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area. In Francois Peron National Park, white beach sand meets azure blue sea and rust-red desert land meets the ocean, which isn’t supposed to happen. Walk the 1.5km Wanamalu Trail between Cape Peron and Skipjack Point for great views of the coastline. The area’s attractions are introduced by interpretive markers along the walk, and two viewing platforms at Skipjack Point offer breathtaking views of the coast and the chance to witness Shark Bay’s diverse marine life, which includes dugongs.

When to go

Apr – May: Balmy days, gentle breeze, locals call this the best time to visit; ideal for swimming, boat cruising, camping, stargazing.

Jun – Sep: Sunny days in the mid-20s, cold nights hovering around 10 degrees and crisp morning winds; suited to kayaking, paddle boarding and hiking; wildflowers bloom from Aug-Oct; whales visit Aug-Sep. 

Oct – Mar: High temps, dry, very windy days; perfect for windsurfing and kiteboarding.
